BUT... IS THE SCULPTURE ON THIS MANTEL REALLY ELEGANT?!
YES — AND MUCH MORE.
First of all, it comes in a compact size, which makes it all the more graceful and perfectly suited to our modern living spaces.
It is sculpted in a fine quality of White Carrara marble. There are countless tones and classifications of this fascinating stone, but the purity and chromatic consistency of the slabs used for this fireplace are absolutely top tier.
It is also in perfect condition — and we mean that literally. This is not one of those charming little salesman’s fables: this mantel requires no restoration. Just a good cleaning and a loving hand-polish with natural beeswax.
The piece is beautifully constructed. Its proportions are solid and compact, like an elegant young woman whose presence catches your eye... even if your wife’s radar is scanning the room and ready to punish the slightest glance. (Yes, I know — I’ll pay for that one later.)
There’s more: its decorative scheme is wonderfully clever.
The sculptor, with great finesse, chose a motif of foliage in the marble (you’ll find it at the center of the mantel face, atop the legs, and on the scrolls at the base), while the cast iron insert is decorated in a fully marine theme — with beautiful “Saint Jacques” seashells sculpted at the center and down the legs.
This fireplace comes from a noble home in Paris, from which it was lovingly detached by our own hands.
It was born sometime between 1850 and 1880,
its Bethlehem a fine sculptor’s workshop in Pietrasanta or nearby in the Apuan region of Italy.
And the noble patina it has acquired over time? A joy to behold.
