A few thoughts—and a little gossip—about this charming nineteenth-century fireplace
Small, graceful, slender and almost understated in its decoration, the Pompadour Plat is undoubtedly one of my favourite nineteenth-century French fireplace mantels.
Its proportions are wonderfully balanced, its design effortlessly elegant, and its price... well, calling it "affordable" hardly seems enough. I would almost describe it as extraordinary value.
Now that I think about it, I remember seeing this very model in the home of Catherine Spaak.
No, I'm not trying to indulge in gossip.
If memory serves me correctly, I once came across a beautiful photograph of her—published in Architectural Digest—sitting and writing in front of a Pompadour Plat fireplace mantel. That image stayed with me, not because of the celebrity herself, but because it seemed to confirm that someone renowned for her elegance and refined taste appreciated exactly the same qualities that make this model so appealing: its charm, its modesty and its quiet grace.
Designed in Paris shortly after 1850, this delightful Louis XV fireplace mantel was originally intended for bedrooms and more intimate reception rooms. Consequently, it was produced in relatively compact dimensions—sizes that, interestingly enough, fit today's increasingly compact interiors just as perfectly as they did nineteenth-century Parisian homes.
Discovered in Paris, dating from the late nineteenth century, this antique White Carrara marble fireplace mantel remains in excellent original condition. The marble displays an exceptionally uniform colour and texture, evidence of the careful selection made by the sculptor when choosing the individual slabs that compose its elegant façade.
