A splendid example of the Louis XV "Trois Coquilles" model, carved from the most classic, noble and elegant of all Carrara marbles: Arabescato Carrara. Discovered in Paris and sculpted during the Napoleon III period.
At first glance, you might well ask:
"It looks very much like other Trois Coquilles fireplaces... where is the rarity?"
A fair question.
After all, the Trois Coquilles is a well-known Louis XV design. It is neither the simplest nor the most elaborate model ever created. It occupies that happy middle ground where elegance, harmony and proportion meet.
But this particular fireplace possesses one remarkable quality that changes everything.
Its marble.
While fireplaces of this model are usually carved from excellent Carrara marble, this example is fashioned from Arabescato Carrara, a variety generally reserved for sculptures and architectural commissions of far greater prestige.
That alone makes it extraordinarily unusual.
In more than fifty years spent specialising in antique fireplaces, I have encountered no more than half a dozen examples like this.
Perhaps one every five years.
That gives some idea of just how rarely such a combination appears.
The fireplace remains in excellent overall condition and has acquired a beautiful natural patina that only time can create.
Its design could only have been conceived in Paris, where nineteenth-century decorative taste reached extraordinary levels of refinement through the celebrated Ateliers des Arts.
Its execution, however—as with so many of the finest French fireplaces—belongs unmistakably to the master sculptors of the Italian Lunigiana, in workshops around Pietrasanta, Sarzana and Carrara, whose craftsmanship supplied much of Europe's finest marble work.
The original decorative cast-iron insert deserves particular attention.
Its surface is enriched with an elegant tapestry pattern, formed by the repeated casting of the same delicate wildflower motif across the entire composition. The effect is subtle, refined and entirely characteristic of the finest cast-iron work of the period.
This elegant Trois Coquilles dates from the mid-nineteenth century (Napoleon III period) and remains in remarkably well-preserved condition—a refined fireplace whose true distinction lies not only in its graceful Louis XV design, but above all in the exceptional marble from which it was carved.
