Description

This elegant Louis XVI antique fireplace mantel belongs to the celebrated "Cannelure" family, named after the finely carved fluted decoration ("cannelure" is the French term for fluting) that defines its refined Neoclassical character. The only sculptural flourish beyond these graceful vertical flutes is the delicate daisy carved at the centre of the frieze.

During the nineteenth century, the Cannelure became the most widespread Louis XVI fireplace design. Its restrained elegance—and, just as importantly, its comparatively affordable cost—made it the preferred choice for bedrooms, studies and private offices.

After all, in nineteenth-century Paris, every respectable room was expected to have its own fireplace. One certainly couldn't risk appearing less distinguished than the neighbours.

The carved daisy was never chosen merely for decoration. Like so many ornaments found on antique fireplaces, it carried a symbolic meaning. It was intended as a wish for the household: innocence, sincerity, purity, freshness and, above all, faithful love.

The example presented here is in excellent original condition, retaining a beautiful natural patina acquired over more than a century and a half. Discovered in Paris, it dates from the Napoleon III period (circa 1860–1880) and is carved from fine White Carrara marble.

A final thought: sustainability and antique fireplaces

On my bedside table lies a book that, judging by its cover, I had expected to be a light-hearted read. Instead, it left me reflecting on something far more important.

One particular cartoon has stayed with me.

A priest stands beside a dying man and gently asks whether he has anything he wishes to confess.

The man replies:

"I'm leaving my son the burning match."

The message is simple.

We have inherited a beautiful world, yet too often we leave it in worse condition than we found it, passing the burden on to the next generation.

What has this to do with an antique fireplace?

More than you might imagine.

For nearly fifty years, every antique fireplace mantel we have recovered, restored and returned to a home has meant one less newly quarried block of marble extracted from the mountains.

Long before sustainability became a fashionable word, I believed that preserving historic craftsmanship was also a way of preserving nature itself.

Perhaps I was a little naïve in my twenties. I truly believed that everyone would immediately understand the value of choosing an authentic antique: something more beautiful, more honest, more artistic and, in many ways, more sensible than a newly manufactured reproduction.

Reality proved more complicated.

But even if we have convinced only a small fraction of people, I still believe that every antique fireplace we rescue is one small victory—for history, for craftsmanship, and for the landscape from which these extraordinary marbles were born.
