“Here we speak of Love, if you please..”
No, it is not a verse from Dolce Stil Novo, nor is it mine, this little phrase of immense musicality..
It is a phrase by Prezzolini, if I remember correctly it was the title of one of his little chapters....
It is a phrase, this one, that always comes to my mind when my eyes and my heart throb for something, as it does now upon seeing this increasingly unobtainable fireplace in Dorata Pietra (Pierre Dorée du Beaujolais")..
It is not that antique, this fireplace, its sculpture is at the turn of the 1800s and 1900s, those were the UNFORGETTABLE years of the Belle Epoque....
And so, you may ask, how is it that you are so outrageous about a fireplace that you yourself judge to be “not that antique”?!
Well, premised that a beautiful object does not necessarily have to be “HIGH ANTIQUE,” and premised that I am neither hot nor cold that a salvaged fireplace may be young in age, this fireplace has several rare arrows in its quiver, let's see them together:
1) It is made around the late nineteenth/early twentieth century (Close to the early twenties Art Nouveau, to be clear..) in an architectural layout (the Louis XIV..) that was forgotten throughout the nineteenth century, to the advantage of the overbearing Louis XV and XVI. And here we already have the first excellence, its stylistic rarity.
2) It has the color of gold, this stone, not for nothing its appellation is “Dorée”. In this regard, I would like to make you aware of something that I learned only a few months ago: It is called “Pierre Dorée du Beaujolais” and it is on the verge of extinction, so much so that already several quarry owners are limiting its extraction and sale... They are centering it, in short, and its price has skyrocketed.... Maybe you who read me couldn't care less, but I know that the Genoese (of origin or adoption it doesn't matter..)these news are of interest, after all, knowing that an ancient artifact you came into possession of was made from a material that will be more and more valuable over time can please everyone, right?
3) But the color, important, all right, is not the only characteristic aesthetic of this fireplace, changing one vowel to the word “color” yields the word “warmth. And here, there really is heat galore, so much to burn!
4) Its elegance... Agreed, it derives from a stylism of almost two centuries prior to its birth, and the sculptor who this fireplace brought forth from his chisel has no merit in it.. True, but ... one merit, however, must be given to those who decided to make this fireplace: The rediscovery of a style that certainly did not deserve the oblivion into which it had fallen.. It was the Art Nouveau architects, or Art Nouveau as they may call it, in their pursuit of the “new,” in their search for new stimuli and new materials, who removed the veil of silence that hid the elegant and sober stylism of the Louis XIV from the eyes of most.. That they then did so by endowing these artifacts with “modern” measurements (which we so much like and make convenient..) was a further merit of theirs.
Summing up, in this “Art Nouveau” fireplace we find Beauty of other times, very pleasant Chromatics (even golden..), Warmth that no marble can possess...
